Default Travelling in different cultures - dress

The world is getting smaller, with ever more exotic destinations becoming within reach of even the most inexperienced traveller.

While this gives us an opportunity to immerse ourselves in different cultures its very easy to cause unwelcome ripples when travelling in places where we dont understand the culture and custom. One area where the host people can be easily offended is how you dress.

Here is a small tip to make the first day go smoothly....

Top Tip:
When arriving in a different county and a different culture, think before donnning the shorts and vest and heading for town. If you are unsure of the traditions of the area observe how local people are dressed and act accordingly.

This may not mean adopting the traditional dress of the area, but say every man is wearing a hat then wear a hat. If the women are wearing long sleeves then wear long sleeves. If you dont see any one in shorts or short skirts, avoid them.

Clearly, as a visitor, you will be expected to act and dress differently, but having an emapthy for local customs will bring you great reward as you get closer to the culture of the area

Us Englishmen have got a poor image in Europe for not making an effort with language, dress and behaviour, Dont make the same mistake!!

Good advice; also be aware that if you are going to get robbed then its probably going to be within the first 48hrs, while you are still finding your feet, and looking a little lost.

Top Tip:

Take extra care during you first 48hrs in a new destination!
