Avoid the favelas, the "more popular" suburbs, even with names such as "The City of God" or "Paradise City" there isn't a whole lot to see. If you are interested to see a favela there are safe and well organised trips, they are educational and teach about the problems that caused the creation of the favelas, as well as supporting local favela projects, help groups and favela businesses.
