Default Buying groceries

Big tip here which is hidden from us most of the time....

Top Tip:
Buy foods that you know were produced in your own country. If you can, buy from local producers.

The problem here is the fuel used and carbon emissions from the aircraft used to transport the food to your country.

I learnt that here in the UK asparagus only has a three or four week season, so at other times its sourced from Spain and Peru. To get here from Peru it takes a nine hour flight, with all the enviromental damage associated with that journey.

So buy local, and keep to what is available seasonally. This will also promote diversity within your own country making for a healthier economy.

Yes, some importing and exporting is out of control. Literally. A little while back I read an article that said that the UK now astonishingly imports and exports the same amount of Milk! That is; we produce all that we need but 50% or so is exported (at great cost), and so the shortfall of 50% is imported back to the UK.

The outcome of which is that everyone involved makes money (mostly the big players in the chain) everyone that is except the consumer who pays over the odds for Milk and the assosiated envormnmental damage. Crazy.

I will look for the report and post when I find it...

I read that one of the big supermarket chains flies flowers to the UK from Africa so we can have them in the winter!

That is madness! The flowers are going to last 5 days max, and the article said it cost ove a million tonnes of CO2 a year!
