Take the train! While in some places this is impractical, with a little imagination you can make it work. Add a few days on to your trip and travel overland to your destination, you will get to see the country at first hand. Like its changing scenery and even the working lives of the people. Trains are better for meeting people by miles!

The UK press has recently run a story about a woman with strong enviromental ideals, who was invited to travel to Australia from the UK to be a bridesmaid. She made the wedding without setting foot on a plane.

I myself have taken a train through mainland Greece to avoid a short, expensive flight and the journey was the highlight of the trip!
