Default Quit Smoking... 6 Top Tips!

Top Tip:

Avoid people and places where you are tempted to smoke. Later on you will be able to handle these with more confidence.

Top Tip:

Alter your habits. Switch to juices or water instead of alcohol or coffee. Take a different route to work. Take a brisk walk instead of a coffee break.

Top Tip:

Use oral substitutes such as sugarless gum or hard candy, raw vegetables such as carrot sticks, or sunflower seeds.

Top Tip:

Exercise or do hobbies that keep your hands busy, such as needlework or woodworking, that can help distract you from the urge to smoke.

Top Tip:

When you were smoking, you breathed deeply as you inhaled the smoke. When the urge strikes now, breathe deeply and picture your lungs filling with fresh, clean air. Remind yourself of your reasons for quitting and the benefits you'll gain as an ex-smoker.

Top Tip:

If you feel that you are about to light up, delay. Tell yourself you must wait at least 10 minutes. Often this simple trick will allow you to move beyond the strong urge to smoke.

Along the same lines is..

Top Tip:
When you have the urge to smoke, get your hands and mouth doing something else. Either pop in some gum or eat fruit, pick up a pen or coin and hold it in a 'smoking' grip. This helps break the pschological link between the craving and the physical response from nerves in your mouth and fingers.

Looks like we have got some help from the British Government!

They announced yesterday that from 6th July 2007 you will not be able to smoke in enclosed public spaces, like bars, pubs and resturants.

This has got to be good news!

Last week the Scots also voted to raise the legal age of smoking from 16 to 18, so good work there too.

Do you like these ideas or do you think they are an infringement of civil liberties?

Its a good very question. Somehow I think its a bit of both, certainly to some extent its an infringement, but then again they are not stopping you smoking in private. At the end of the day its a pretty unsociable thing to do in public (unless everyone has agreed that its okay), and so if you need legislation to stop unsociable habits so-be-it.

Remember that spitting used to be a social norm, they used to have signs on buses thats said "No Spitting"! Amazing to think about it now. I think it will be the same with smoking in 10 or 15 years.
